How many times in the middle of making a delicious dessert You have the “Oh crap. I thought I had that ingredient, but looks like I don’t,” moment? And of course, It’s quite easy to hop out to the store and buy (in this case – a can of sweetened condensed milk), but for me It’s always more fun to DIY.
It takes a couple of minutes, after which you have a jar of simple, creamy sweetness, and it will spare you a trip to the grocery store. I’ve always liked the flavor of condensed milk and as you well know, sweetened condensed milk makes a lot of stuff taste better. Condensed milk on a thick, fluffy slice of buttered golden toast (my favorite), condensed milk drizzled on top of shaved ice, condensed milk in tapioca milk tea, condensed milk in pound cake….etc This Condensed milk recipe will sweeten your life in more ways than one.
Yield: 1 1/2 Cups
Ingredients
1 cup powdered milk
2/3 cup granulated sugar
1/3 cup boiling water
1/4 cup (2 oz) melted butter
1/2 tsp vanilla
Preparation
1. Place the powdered milk, granulated sugar, vanilla, boiling water, and the melted butter in a blender.
2. Blend all ingredients together until they are smooth, scraping down the sides of the blender occasionally to get all the dry ingredients incorporated.
3. If your homemade condensed milk is too thick to pour easily, add another spoonful or two of boiling water and whisk some more to incorporate.
4. Store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. It will get thicker when it is refrigerated, but will loosen up when stirred and brought to room temperature.
Oo, I never even thought about making condensed milk myself…! I am not a huge fan of the milk on its own, but of course it’s the base of dulce de leche so good to know I can now make even the milk myself too!
That’s a great idea! Homemade fresh condensed milk is way better than canned milk. I’m certainly going to attempt to make this one♥
Wouldn’t you know – I just came home from the store with a small can of it – I didn’t know you could make it – Thank you so much for the recipe!
Could regular milk be substituted for powdered? and just omit the water?
Hi,Valerie.Use only powdered milk, don’t use regular milk.
